Redcar Central Station
Renovation
HL is pleased to announce the completion of the highly
awaited restoration of the Redcar and Cleveland Central
Railway Station, a Grade II-listed building originally
constructed in 1861. Unique in Cleveland for maintaining its
original train shed, the station has significant architectural
and historical value. After its closure, it transformed into
the Redcar Station Business Centre in the 1980s, only to
close again in 2013. Neglect caused severe deterioration
through rain damage, vandalism, and material theft.
Commissioned by the Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council,
HL aimed to revitalize the site as a civic gateway and
community hub, enhancing connectivity to the town center
and seafront. The restoration emphasized conservation,
revealing the original train shed and replacing the main
entrance with a glass-enclosed replica that adds a modern
touch.
Sustainability was a priority; the project reused 40% of the
existing roof slate and salvaged bricks for repairs. Lowenergy features, such as automatic ventilation and discreet
photovoltaic panels on new roofs, further improve
efficiency. Flexible commercial pod units were introduced
in the train shed for local cafés, markets, and community
events, fostering engagement and promoting economic
regeneration in the area.
