Newcastle Discovery Museum Re-Roofing Works
HL has taken on the exciting role of Lead Designer for the roof
restoration project at the Grade II-listed Newcastle Discovery
Museum. This project follows a successful grant application,
which secured £3 million for The North East Museums, along
with an additional £865,000 from Newcastle City Council.
The building, originally constructed in 1899 as the Cooperatives
Wholesale Society's warehouse and distribution centre, has
become one of the North East's most recognised landmarks.
Now operating as a museum, it attracts over 300,000 visitors
each year who come to explore the rich history of science and
heritage in the North East. Additionally, the building houses the
Tyne and Wear Archives and serves as the central office for
North Easet Museums.
The project entails essential external repairs to protect both
the interior and exterior of the building. This includes
completely re-roofing the east block by replacing the existing
uninsulated slate roof with a new insulated roof that matches
the original design. Additionally, repair work will be conducted
on the external masonry and windows.
With a strong team that includes Adelphi Consulting Engineers,
Todd Milburn, and Newcastle City Council, the planned
completion is set for Spring 2027.
